Signese.com is a collection of photos of Chinese characters in action. Although most are taken by myself on the streets of Beijing, many are contributions, which can be sent directly from your mobile phone.

Queries and thoughts about the photos are always welcome via the comment function.

    * That is my most hated character! I have become convinced that there is some agent of the dark powers following me around, noting which are my favourite bars, restaurants, hang-outs, dives and destinations then slapping “demolish” notices on them! I'’ve taken to hanging around McDonalds and the local government offices, but they haven’t spotted that yet!

    * Get yourself a tin of paint and slap a 拆 or two on your least favourite building - it’ll give them a fright at least, and you never know your luck . . .

    * Beijing’s plan to mix English with Pinyin on its street signs has spared hutong from translation. My cynical side suspects the real reason is that by the time they finish the signs there will have been so much chai that there won’t be enough real hutong left to matter. :-(
