Signese.com is a collection of photos of Chinese characters in action. Although most are taken by myself on the streets of Beijing, many are contributions, which can be sent directly from your mobile phone.
Queries and thoughts about the photos are always welcome via the comment function.

* This is a good example of the “four-character” feature of most Chinese public exhortations. You should find an example of one of those public “good citizen” plaques, in which every requirement of being a good citizen is couched in a 4-character phrase. One gets the impression that any semantic concept in the human sphere can be condensed into exactly four characters. Fascinating. Only Chinese can do this. English could never condense “Respect the elderly and cherish the young” into four syllables.

* Hmmm, something tells me Roddy likes the look of a blurry bicyclist in front of his bus stop ads.

* Ha! You find me a Beijing bus stop without people cycling past it then . . .

* the person is in the exact same position in both photos! c’mon now… this is your signature “bus stop picture” style! admit it!

* Well obviously, as the good citizens of Beijing won’t let me take a photo WITHOUT the cyclists, I might as well make sure it’s framed properly!
